The ‘70s saw a massive wave of interest in offshore sailing thanks to the first ever Cape to Rio Race in 1971. Boats were specially built for that and subsequent races. Families and friends got together, and syndicates were formed, specifically so that people could compete in that iconic event, and also fulfill their dreams of building a yacht and crossing an ocean.
