First ORC Regatta in RSA

The Fling Regatta distinguished itself for being the first event run under the ORC Rule (rather than IRC or PHRF) in South Africa. Amongst the top boats in Class 1, the results were similar to what they would have been under IRC – however, the reasoning for introducing ORC is probably sound. It will be interesting to see if other yacht clubs follow RCYC’s lead?


35 yachts, split over 3 classes, took part. The already substantial Cape Town fleet was bolstered by entries from both Durban and Port Elizabeth and it was good to see these teams making the effort. 7 races were scheduled, managed by Race Officer Stuart Childerley, but the wind did not co-operate and only t
